Kilwa island (Swahili: Kisiwa) is located in the southern coast of Tanzania in Lindi region. Kilwa kisiwa was famous since 8th century AD and was a very powerful settlement and trade city, Among Kilwa’s exports, were spices, tortoiseshell, coconut oil, ivory, and aromatic gums, as well as gold and slaves in return they received foreign ceramics and luxury clothes. Kilwa has beautiful notable features as Great Mosque It is one of the earliest surviving mosques on the Swahili Coast, Palace of Husuni Kubwa (‘the great Fort’) and Husuni ndogo (‘the little fort’) built from the coral rubble and limestone mortar.
